Be flexible with your departure and arrival airports
Instead of being fixed on one airport or another, if you can manage it, select “Add nearby airports” for both your departure and arrival airports.
This enables the search engine to find more bargain flights for you! As a rule of thumb, the fewer filters the better in order to get a wider variety of results. And of course, don’t be afraid to type “Everywhere” as your destination. You’ll be surprised what deals are on offer!
As for whether or not to fly direct or return, here’s Skyscanner weighing in on the subject.

Changing your travel dates by a day or two can help you find MORE bargain flights
This connects to my simple method of booking ultra-cheap flights! Rather than being dead set on certain dates, if you can, choose the “Whole Month” option.
As you play with dates, feel free to take Skyscanner’s money-saving advice of changing a day or two to get a better deal. They’ve taken so much of the hassle out of flight shopping that it’s actually fun!

Check your desired flights at different times in the day and the week
If you have the time to run this experiment, I assure you, you will be fascinated at how quickly ticket prices change! To save time, you can also set up a Skyscanner price alert.
Just look for the alarm bell symbol and/or the button “Get Price Alerts” and follow the instructions to create a new alert. You can create multiple alerts if you wish!
Then, every time the price of the ticket changes, you’ll receive an e-mail notifying you. Keep in mind, Skyscanner has no control over the ticket prices. It helps to stay in the loop though!
What I’ve learned from flying as a volunteer on a budget is that often plans, dates and locations need to be slightly modified. Try not to get your hopes totally set on one plan. If you can open up your options a little bit, you can close those purse strings even tighter!
Happy ‘Skyscanning,’
B the travelling MS xx
